The city of Osnabrück and LIST are kicking off the downtown revitalization project. Johannisstraße in Osnabrück is rapidly evolving into a vibrant urban neighborhood.
In early April, Osnabrück Mayor Katharina Pötter and Michael Garstka, managing partner of LIST Develop Commercial, met to discuss the positive developments surrounding the mixed-use property on Johannisstraße developed by LIST—and to look ahead together.
Where vacancy had prevailed for years, LIST has sent a clear signal with the new building on Johannisstraße: downtown locations offer more opportunities than risks. Hospitality offerings, restaurants, and services have been successfully brought together and have revitalized the neighborhood around Johanniskirche. We have demonstrated that such properties can be repurposed effectively and in a way that suits the downtown environment.
The results are entirely positive: the tenants in the building are satisfied, as are the surrounding business owners, who perceive a noticeably better, overall calmer atmosphere on the street.
Neighborhood development is gaining momentum
Johannisstraße continues to be a hub of activity: Two buildings have already been demolished in the immediate vicinity of the former Wöhrl site, and another renovation project is on the horizon. The city is also working to establish a street community that connects local businesses, hotels, restaurants, and other stakeholders in the neighborhood. These efforts are complemented by the city’s neighborhood management program and the Downtown Task Force. LIST has kicked things off and provided the motivation. Now the development is gaining momentum.
