Start-up Campus OWL Paderborn
The East Westphalia-Lippe startup scene is now finding a home on the former barracks grounds.
In a central location in Paderborn, just a few kilometers from the cathedral, a new, innovative university building has been constructed on the grounds of the Barker Barracks. LIST Bau constructed the so-called “Start-up Campus OWL”—considered a flagship project for the future development of the Barker site—on a turnkey basis.
The new building is designed to connect students and business leaders, so the property’s concept generates synergies at all levels: The ground floor of the approximately 9,800-square-meter building was designed as a base level. Among other things, it features a seminar area that can also be used for events, coworking spaces, and a wide variety of workshops. Focus rooms and office spaces are located on the first and second floors. A particular highlight is the rooftop terrace on the third floor, which also features additional meeting rooms.
From the outside, the Start-up Campus OWL stands out thanks to the interplay of different facades: On the ground floor, a curtain wall of concrete with a barcode-like appearance was installed. On the upper floors, a double facade consisting of metal cassettes and sheet metal pilasters was implemented.
LIST Construction has been entrusted with the project since the detailed design phase. For the building services, the general contractor was supported by the in-house planning firm LIST Ingenieure.
