DGNB Platinum Certification Fire Station in Düsseldorf
A new building for the volunteer fire department has been constructed in the Kaiserswerth neighborhood of Düsseldorf; it celebrated its grand opening on July 11, 2025.
The new building is a groundbreaking component of “Düsseldorf, Climate Capital.” As part of this comprehensive and innovative project, LIST Eco was commissioned to provide all consulting and certification services related to sustainable construction. First, LIST Eco worked with the City of Düsseldorf to establish a CO2 budget. Subsequently, a project-specific sustainability and CO2 concept was developed. In addition, LIST Eco conducted the building’s life cycle assessment based on the BIM model and prepared the BIM-based building resource passport.

Another aspect of the project was to illustrate the circular effects of the different variants: the reuse of clinker and the use of clinker with high recycled content in the building’s life cycle assessment in accordance with QNG requirements. The goal was to identify a sustainable solution for the facade material.
Specifically, the task was to examine the influence of the variants on the “building-related gray emissions” from construction and to classify these in relation to QNG requirements in order to illustrate the potential of reuse and recycling of clinker not only in terms of resource efficiency and circularity but also in terms of their significance for climate protection. In addition, the costs for an economic-ecological analysis in relation to the QNG guidelines were visually presented to provide decision-making templates for the planning process.
In April 2025, the project achieved the DGNB pre-certification with a score of 84.3% Platinum.
The ideal exterior cladding material.
Based on circularity and CO2 assessments, for example, the optimal facade material was identified. The three material options that were compared were: reinforced concrete (conventional/CO2-optimized), Corten steel, or a brick facade (new/reused). In the end, reused brick was chosen as the optimal option in terms of the CO2 footprint, embodied energy, and circularity.
The Sustainability Concept:
- Definition of a Maximum CO2 Budget
- BIM-Based Life Cycle Assessment
- Reuse of Materials
- Preparation of a building resource passport
- Selection of non-toxic building materials
